An Evening with Jim Obergefell

Join Butler University for a Founder’s Week keynote featuring Jim Obergefell, whose name became synonymous with the landmark Supreme Court case that secured marriage equality nationwide. Reflecting on the ten-year anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges, this evening will explore themes of equity, resilience, and civic courage—values shared by Butler’s founder, abolitionist Ovid Butler.

A self-described “accidental activist,” Obergefell entered the public eye simply by seeking to marry the man he loved. Since then, he has become a powerful advocate for civil rights, speaking nationwide on marriage equality, LGBTQ+ protections, religious freedom debates, and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law.

This event is presented in accordance with Butler University policies. Views expressed are those of the speaker and organizers and do not necessarily reflect those of the university.
